What goes into a paver driveway that holds up?

A paver driveway in Corona is a surface of interlocking concrete pavers laid over a packed gravel base, with solid restraints along the edges that keep the pavers squeezed tight so they stay locked together under the weight of your car. We build them from the first shovel of dirt to the last sweep of joint sand.

Most of these calls come from people with a concrete driveway that's cracked and settled, or an older paver driveway that's started to rut and spread at the sides. The price moves mostly with the size of the driveway, whether old concrete has to come out first, how deep the base needs to go for your soil, the edging, whether you need a drain pipe under it and the pavers you pick. The schedule turns on whether we're touching the curb, since that goes through the city, and on what we find once we dig. If your front walk is in the same shape, we can build a new walkway to match. Once I've seen the driveway, the written estimate gives you your own figure and spells out what the work includes.

How do you know your driveway needs work?

Cracks and sunken slabs

Concrete that's cracked through and dropped in places usually means the ground under it moved or washed out, so a patch on top won't hold for long. The longer it goes, the more water gets in under the edges, and the more there is to dig out when you finally replace it.

Ruts where the tires roll

Pavers dipping in two tracks, often with water standing in them after a rain, usually point to a base that was too thin or stays wet. Every trip in and out pushes the ruts deeper, until the pavers have to come up and the base gets rebuilt.

Gaps opening at the sides

Pavers drifting outward with gaps showing between them usually means the edging has given out or was never strong enough for a car. Once the edge lets go, the rest loosens from the outside in, and a few loose pavers turn into a whole section.

What our driveway paver work includes

Our estimate spells out how deep the base goes, what holds the edges and how water gets away, which lets you put our quote beside anyone else's and compare it line by line. On the job, our crew breaks out the old concrete if there is any, digs down to firm ground and shapes the grade so water runs where we planned it. We spread the gravel base in layers and pack each one hard, because a base dumped in all at once stays soft in the middle. That part is slow and nobody sees it, but it's what the whole driveway sits on. Then we set the edge restraint, level a thin bed of sand, lay the pavers, run a plate compactor over them and sweep sand into the joints so they lock together, and we haul off the spoils and clean up.

A driveway often brings the rest of the front yard into question. If it cuts into a slope or sits below a raised bed, retaining wall construction keeps that soil from washing onto the new pavers. When old brick columns, planters or porch steps sit right beside it, masonry restoration brings them back so they don't look worn next to the new surface.

  • Standard interlocking pavers

These suit most Corona driveways, set on sand over a packed base with the joints filled so the pavers lock together. You get the widest choice of shapes and colors, and a single broken paver can come out and be replaced without tearing up the rest.

  • Permeable pavers

These suit a lot where you'd rather have rain soak down through wider joints than run off to the street. They sit on a different, open stone base, so they take more planning up front.

  • Replacing an old concrete slab

This suits a cracked driveway you're done patching, since we break out the slab and haul it away before the base goes in. Tear-out adds cost, so I list it separately on the estimate.

Driveway pavers in Corona, from the curb to the clay

In Corona, any work over the street curb, such as widening the opening where your driveway meets the street, needs a permit from the city, and that part is settled. When your job includes curb work, we pull the permit, set up the inspections and meet the inspector on site. For anything else where I'm not sure what applies, we ask the city before we start rather than guess.

The bigger local factor is the dirt. Plenty of yards around Corona have clay that holds water and swells, and on those lots we plan for a deeper base and a way to carry water out. The soil maps for western Riverside County show how fast your soil takes in water, how much weight it carries and how much it shrinks and swells, which is what I'm weighing when I size the base. We're based in Corona and work across the cities around it, and we run into the same mix of clay and sandier ground on driveways in Norco and Eastvale.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a paver driveway cost in Corona, CA?

One Riverside cost guide puts a sand-based concrete paver driveway at about $16 to $20 per square foot installed, not counting tearing out an old driveway. That's what the work usually runs in the area, not our price, and a deeper base, a drain pipe, curb work or removing old concrete all push a job's number up. I'll give you your own figure in the free written estimate after I've seen the driveway.

How thick should the base be under driveway pavers?

The paver trade group's national guide says a home driveway on well-drained soil should have at least 6 inches of base after it's packed down, compared with 4 inches for a sidewalk or patio. That same Riverside cost guide prices its driveway on a 4-inch base, so ask each installer what depth their quote includes. The guide also says the right thickness depends on traffic, soil type, how well the soil drains, moisture and climate, so it's fair to ask how they sized the base for your lot.

What is the best way to keep driveway pavers from spreading apart?

A solid edge restraint along every outside edge, and anywhere the pavers meet another material, is what keeps them packed tight and locked together. The trade group says flat metal or plastic landscape edging isn't acceptable for this and advises against timber, because it warps and rots. Ask what edge each quote uses, since you won't see it once the job is done.

How wide can my driveway opening be at the curb in Corona?

Corona's code won't allow curb work that leaves an opening wider than half of your lot's frontage along that curb. The city also keeps driveways and curb openings at least five feet from fire hydrants, streetlight poles, power poles, meter boxes, vaults and manholes. If you're thinking about widening, I measure all of that at the estimate before we plan anything.

What causes pavers to sink on clay soil?

Usually it's water sitting in the base, because clay drains slowly and a soaked base gives under the weight of a car. The trade group recommends drain pipes under paving that carries vehicles on clay or other slow-draining soil, and says the small added cost pays for itself many times over in extra years of pavement life. The soil maps mentioned above will tell you whether your lot is clay.

Are permeable pavers a good choice for a driveway?

They can be, since permeable interlocking pavers are built for driveways as well as walkways, parking lots and alleys. Federal highway guidance notes that the pavers and base can be lifted out and put back quickly, so a utility cut doesn't leave an ugly patch. It also says they're cleaned with ordinary sweeping or vacuum equipment, and that vacuuming can bring back a surface that's clogged.
